Safeguarding Young Performers: What Every Parent Should Know
Industry 101 - Episode 2 - Safeguarding
When we think about helping our children pursue opportunities in acting, musical theatre or television, most of us focus on auditions, agents and training. But there is another conversation that matter just as much… safeguarding.
The performing arts industry can offer incredible opportunities for young people. It can build confidence, resilience, creativity and lifelong memories. But it is also an adult working environment, and understanding how children are protected within that environment is something every parent should take the time to learn.
Many families assume that if a production is professional, safeguarding will simply be taken care of. The reality is that parents need to understand their own role, the role of chaperones, and the systems that exist to keep young performers safe.
As a former child actor, licensed chaperone, performing arts school principal and now a parent myself, I’ve seen this industry from every angle. I’ve experienced the opportunities first-hand, but I’ve also seen the situations where better awareness and clearer boundaries could have made a real difference.
In Episode 2 of Showing Up, we’re talking about the safeguarding knowledge I wish every family had before their child stepped onto a stage, film set or television production.
We’ll explore some of the questions parents often don’t know to ask, the responsibilities that come with professional work, and why safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility—not just the production’s.
If your child is already performing, auditioning or considering professional opportunities, this is one of the most important episodes in the series.
